Roommates are supposed to split rent, share chores, and maybe binge a Netflix series together — not run a black-market sock hustle behind your back.
That’s what Kaleb J., 32, from Las Vegas, says happened in his apartment after he made a bizarre discovery that turned his laundry routine upside down.
Kaleb, who works at a local auto body shop is a personal trainer and plays basketball three nights a week, admits he isn’t the best at keeping up with laundry. “I run through socks like crazy,” he said, adding that he’d chalked up his missing pairs to his own bad habits and busy schedule.
But recently, things weren’t adding up.
“I came home early one day and saw two pairs of my socks in a Ziploc bag just sitting on the counter,” Kaleb told Footwires News. “I was like, what’s going on here?”
That’s when his roommate of three years, Brandon, fessed up.
According to Kaleb, Brandon had been quietly collecting his “used, stinky, size-14 basketball socks” from the hamper and selling them to a few guys from the gym for the past year. When one of them approached him to ask if he could facilitate a deal, ( due to Kaleb looking unapproachable) he bypassed Kaleb entirely and processed the transaction himself.
“I thought he was joking at first,” Kaleb said. “But then he told me he’d actually been replacing some of my socks when they went missing. He swore he was buying me new ones, but I had a feeling those weren’t for me.”
Kaleb says he’s still processing the side hustle revelation. “I mean… I guess I should be flattered someone wants my stinky socks? But also, man, just tell me!”
As for Brandon, Kaleb says he’s agreed to stop the sock trade — at least without permission. Brandon says guys would ask him directly if he didn’t look so aggressive.
Moral of the story? Always check your hamper… and maybe your roommate’s side hustle too.
